Earlier this week, the Taliban tied up Indian author Sushmita Banerjee’s family members and then shot her in the head, according to police. The assumed motivation? Her accurate portrayal of life in Taliban Afghanistan.

Banerjee, who was 49 when she, married an Afghan businessman as a young woman and moved with him to Kabul. There she worked educating women on health issues. The Taliban objected, and Banerjee tunneled out of her home to escape the country.

Back in India, she wrote a best-seller about her experiences. In January, she moved back to Kabul to be with her husband and write a second book -- plans that were cut short by her horrifying murder.
