An express train skidded off the rails, crashed into a wall and burst into flames on Wednesday while rounding a curve outside Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. Rescuers continued to wade through the damage on Thursday, which left at least 77 dead and more than 100 injured.

The train had 218 passengers aboard and was en route to Ferrol from Madrid when it derailed. The state rail company, Renfe, that operated that train said it had it gone through a routine inspection that morning.
