A royal decree announced on Sunday that Saudi Arabia will change its weekends from Thursday-Friday to Friday-Saturday. The change is set to take effect June 29 and will align their banking and business days with the majority of the world as well as other countries in the region. Most recently, Oman made a similar change to their schedule for the same reasons.
The proposal originally failed in 2007 but the Saudi business community, especially those in the financial hub of Dubai, kept pushing for reform.
In the decree, King Abdullah said it is, "for the sake of putting an end to the negative effects and the lost economic opportunities."
