There are three names from Paris Fashion Week on every fashionistas lips: Rick Owens, Alexander Wang and Jun Takahashi. Each designer (for Rick Owens, Balenciaga and Undercover respectively) served up a buzzy runway show for their 2014 Spring/Summer collection sparking debate, awe or just plain excitement. A quick peek below:
Rick Owens stepped way out of the box for his fashion show quite literally. The Californian-turned-Parisian replaced his models with a fierce step team wearing mean-mugging faces to match. Is it commentary on the pervasiveness of stick-thin, white models on the runway? A racist/offensive move? The debate continues but one thing's for certain: this is the most talked about show of the season.
Alexander Wang is known as a beloved fashion prodigy, launching a label in his own name after just two years at Parsons. Wang continued his ascent when he was named Creative Director for the storied French fashion house, Balenciaga in November 2012. The designer received praise yet again in his second collection for the label using both nods to founder Cristóbal Balenciaga and his own tougher street style woven in.
Social media has made its way into the rest of culture whether it be trending hashtags on TV or Instagram in rap lyrics. Designer Jun Takahashi thought fashion shouldn't be left out and included references in the Underground collection. The "selfie" t-shirt, now a thing.
