Oscar Pistorius became a global phenomenon as a double-amputee Olympic runner from South Africa. His image crumbled, however, with the accusation that he killed his model girlfriend. Pistorius was indicted on Monday for her murder on what would've been her 30th birthday.

The March 3 trial will attempt to identify whether Pistorius shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp with the intention to kill or if it was an accident as he claims. Pistorius has said that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder in their Pretoria, South Africa home. The prosecution will aim to prove that the fatal gunshots through the locked bathroom door were premeditated after a fight between the couple.

Pistorius faces a life sentence with a minimum 25 years in prison before parole.
