President Obama commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, meant to secure the same compensation for men and women, with a speech on Monday.
Unfortunately, the disparity still exists. Obama referred to a recently conducted study that shows 40% of women in American today are the main breadwinners for their household, even though they still earn less than men.
"When women are taking home the bacon, they shouldn't be getting just a little bit of bacon," he said. He continued to say that the wage gap could add up to be hundreds of thousands of dollars less for a woman over the course of her career and he hopes for more for his own daughters.
Later in the speech, Obama also mentioned equal opportunity for the gay community and urged congress to support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
