PepsiCo is pulling an advertisment that's been dubbed 'the most racist ad in history.' The ad was for Mountain Dew, as a part of a collaboration with hip-hop artist Tyler The Creator. The spot in question (above, until it gets taken down) is part 3 of a 4 part series.
In brief, the minute-long ad shows a severely bruised and beaten woman standing in front of a police line-up, trying to identify her assailant among 4 black men and a goat. While she ponders the group, the goat whispers threats and the woman runs away in terror.
The ad has been criticized for its perceived racism, since the 4 assailants are black and the victim is white. The racism, however, is subtler than ad's anti-woman overtones: the entire series seems to making light of a violent attack against a woman. In the spot in question, the punchline seems to be that the assaulted woman is too terrified to identify her attacker.
A spokesman for the brand made the following statement:
"We understand how this video could be perceived by some as offensive, and we apologize to those who were offended. We have removed the video from all Mountain Dew channels and have been informed that Tyler is removing it from his channels as well."
