Crowds Cheer As Minnesota Passes Gay Marriage Bill

On Monday evening, Minnesota's State Senate signed into law a bill legalizing same sex marriage in the state, and the state's governor, Mark Dayton, signed it into law Tuesday. Minnesota is the 12th state in the country to legalize gay marriage and only the second in the Midwest. It will go into effect August 1.

The issue is shifting quickly, both in Minnesota and nationally. Just six months ago, the state voted to defeat a measure that would have explicitly banned gay marriage -- and it's the third state in the country to embrace marriage equality in the last ten days, joining Rhode Island and Delaware, both of which passed similar bills this month.

The House passed the bill last Thursday.
