Nelson Mandela, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist and former South African president, has remained in critical condition since Sunday. Mandela was admitted to the hospital on June 8 with a recurring lung infection likely caused by a tuberculosis infection he contracted while imprisoned.
Supporters flocked to the Pretoria hospital where the 94-year-old leader currently remains, bringing flowers, cards and prayers to the site. The group began chanting his name and singing songs.
Mandela's daughter Zindzi said her father, sometimes called by his traditional clan name Madiba, "opened his eyes" and smiled when he heard that Obama is set to visit South Africa on Friday as part of his African tour.
