Secretary of State John Kerry along with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel hosted their Russian counterparts in Washington on Friday. The visit of Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu comes just two days after Obama notably canceled a meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
The final straw for U.S. diplomats was Russia's decision to grant asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden. While Obama acknowledged there is no extradition agreement between the two countries, he said on numerous occasions that he hoped for assistance.
Other issues discussed will likely be the involvement of both nations in Syria's civil war -- where Putin has already provided arms for the government -- U.S. missile defense in Europe, and Russia's assault against any internal dissent. Most famously, an all-female punk collective in Russia called Pussy Riot have gained international support after some members were arrested.
