Justin Bieber's Tone-Deaf Anne Frank Comments Turn The Internet Against Him
- 07/15/2013 02:29 PM EDT
Justin Bieber is back in the news for doing something stupid and/or juvenille -- in what's starting to feel like an increasingly common headline. The 19-year-old idol has recently been in the news for passing out at a concert, screaming at a papparazzo, smoking some weed, and other antics perhaps not terribly uncommon for a kid of his age. Which is why it was a nice change that he decided to pause and dedicate some time to historical tourism.
In Amsterdam on Friday, Bieber made an after-hours visit to The Anne Frank House and wrote the following in the guesbook:
"Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."
CNN, in summing up Bieber's entry, rather succintly illustrated why the comments have struck many as tone-deaf, writing:
"Adolescent and teen girls obsessed with the Canadian singer are known as 'beliebers.' Anne Frank died a teenager in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945."
The comment was posted by The Anne Frank House on its Facebook page, and has since generated thousands of comments, mostly like this, which is the top comment:
"She would've been a WHAT? That little idiot is way too full of himself. She's an important historical figure so show some respect."
Anne Frank House, for its part, seems to be doing its best to soft-pedal the controversy. In a statement released Monday, it said that it was happy for Bieber's visit and only hoped that it would encourage more people to read her diary and visit the site.
