Viewers watching Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Sunday were in for a big surprise that had nothing to do with basketball. In a commercial airing before the end of the second quarter, Samsung and Jay-Z announced the release of his newest album Magna Carta Holy Grail. The catch: Samsung has already purchased 1 million copies to release the tracks 72-hours in advance for free for their Galaxy smartphone users.
The marketing strategy coincides with the introduction of Samsung's new music app, set to launch June 24, that will compete with Apple's recent push for iTunes Radio. Galaxy users will have access to the album on July 4, everyone else will have to wait for July 7.
At $5 a piece, Jay-Z has used the opportunity as an advertising campaign and to make a cool $5 million before the album even drops.
