Tens of thousands of Hawaiians gathered on Memorial Day to partake in the annual latern festival. More than 5,000 lanterns were set sail in the sea at Ala Moana Beach Park’s Magic Island on Oahu.
The lanterns are inscribed with the names of relatives and loved ones who've died and prayers for the future. The ceremony began in 1952, founded by the Shinnyo-en Buddhist sect.
