A fire caused by an explosion engulfed a poultry plant in northeastern China on Monday killing at least 119 people and injuring at least 54. Survivors have recounted stories of being unable to escape the building and finding fire escapes and exits blocked. The blast, which occurred over the course of a shift change with about 350 workers inside, is believed to be caused by an ammonia leak.
The disaster comes at a time where worldwide safety standards are being questioned. China, in particular, has been harshly criticized for valuing efficiency and production above the safety of their workers. This plant specifically was insulated with a highy-flammable foam.
